General Testing Process

General details regarding our testing process can be found at http://wiki.rockalypse.org/HCD/Website_Testing_Process.

What we wanted to find out

When talking to the Fedora Team IRC they stated that the goal of this website update was to bring in new users to the community to help work with fedora. Community1.JPG

Tasks

Using the three mockups we created we designated three tasks that would incompous all the aspects of the community that members would use.

  • Task 1
    • A fedora user of 1.5 years wants to join an aspect of the community that would match their interests and knowledge.
      • This was the first task that our tester was asked to accomplish because it allowed us to have an idea of how important the placement of the more technical side of the community should be done.
      • Over all testers were able to use this section correctly.
      • The dificulty came with our testers being unfamiliar with what the different roles in the community entailed. To compensate for this we went to the Fedora Wiki and printed off the detailed list of the different community aspects.

  • Task 2
    • Find out about upcoming events that fedora is having and look to see if people are talking about any of the events in the community.
      • This task was asked because members of the community are all about communications. This allowed the testers to find out where the recent news section was located and where community members blogs where listed.
      • Over all testers were able to find where they could find infromation about events.
      • All of our testers thought the picture was a calendar, this then had them clicking on wrong links.
      • Testers where unsure of where to find blog posts about events. They all clicked on fedora planet but they didnt really know what that was.

Community3.JPG

  • Task 3
    • You have become an ambassador for Fedora and are making plans to travel to local schools to explain fedora and bring in more users. What sections would be useful to you and the new fedora users on this page?
      • The goal of this task was to have our testers find the twitter and facebook section.
      • None of the testers clicked on the bar that contained that information.
      • The testers went to the recent news, ambassador tab, and to fedora planet.
      • The fedora goodies tab was also looked over.

Results

Our testing concluded that it was most helpful to have the technical and nontechnical sections of the community visible through out the entire page. Not to have it broken up with one section being at the top and the other being at the bottom. The twitter feed was greatly looked over, and we decided that it was important if users were family with the page, but new users would just view it as the heading bar.

Notes from our testing can be found here [Website Testing Results[1]]

Final Mockup

In our final mock-up we combined aspects of all three of our mock-ups in to one super mock-up. We joined different sections together to create more room on the page for different things. We also had the picture become a calender and placed that with upcoming events.

Recommendations

From our usability testing we recommend that:

  • Combine the social and technical aspects of the pages so it flows through out.
  • Make the twitter feed more prominent.
  • Join tabs together to create more room on the page for features.
